Are there times when you make so many posts that you can actually feel that you are losing or have lost the direction of your blog. I was reviewing the different categories I have posted against this blog and it covers a wide range of diverse subjects all related to blogging and how blogging can be turned into a home business opportunity. So is getting traffic to your blog a black art or is there a secret formula that guarantees you success. Perhaps just paying Google for position is the answer. I attended an advanced tips and techniques webinar with Google the other day discussing lots of different ways for getting a better click through rate on your Adsense ads. There were some really good techniques shared but not much said about getting traffic to your blog, a little bit to be fair but really not that much.

Now for me the biggest influence on Adsense income is getting traffic to your blog in enough quantities that you get a reasonable number of clicks. So when they opened the webinar up to a questions and answers session, I asked one simple question. I basically put up the question what is the most important feature of a blog that will result in Google placing it high up on the search engine results page, the consequence of which is getting traffic to your blog.

I was playing devils advocate a bit, because I pretty much knew what the response to that question would be…..

The best style blogs are first and foremost the ones that have a message to communicate or a problem to solve and do it by providing great content. Before you get overly concerned with the look of your blog you need to understand that the main reason people visit blogs is to gain access to quality content. Some of the most highly visited blogs I have found have used standard format templates and just got on with the business of communicating with their target audience.

Its also worth noting that search engines can’t tell the difference between a highly polished, all singing and all dancing blog any more than they can a bog standard off the shelf template that comes as your starter for ten. Search engines look primarily at text and relate that text to enquiries entered into their search boxes. Also as things stand at the moment, many of the tools that provide a wow factor for a blog in terms of visual presentation are pretty much impenetrable to the search engines, and can easily leave them flaying about in the dark when it comes to trying to interpret the content of a blog.
