Hi Danai, yes a good portfolio plus recommendations from previous clients are very good ways of securing commissions. But everyone has to start somewhere so many a professional and efficient stance from the outset and when you contact people is very important. It is basically about making your site search engine friendly, putting your topic (keywords) in a place where they have the most impact and ensuring the search engines don’t hit any road blocks. It is the human audience that enjoys the great content and, by letting others know where to find it, will ensure that your site grows naturally in importance.

Load time I think really needs to be seriously considered, it is so easy for a visitor to click the X if a site is taking too long to load and that is before they ever get a chance to test the navigation, evaluate the quality of the content or test the relevancy of the link that brought them to the site.
