Blogging About Blogging, But Is It Your Passion?
3Searching for a subject to blog about can be quite a difficult process and one of the first obstacles a newbie blogger has to face. Many adopt the option of blogging about blogging and although that can be a beneficial route to take, it is one which has some pretty high profile competition and requires a lot of expertise to gain credibility.
The thing about blogging is that, whether you believe it or not, it is a very personal journey and it does not really matter which subject you end up adopting. If you bring to the subject your own personal style and personality, you can make inroads on any subject as long as the way you write, present yourself and interact is appealing.
So to answer the question, yes you can blog about any subject you like, even subjects that appear to be in saturation and over subscribed such as blogging about blogging. You just have to realise that when you select some subjects, which are in a highly competitive arena, you are going to have to work very hard at establishing your presence in the community that seeks out the subject matter and your passion for the subject will need to shine through.
There are alternatives of course and the most obvious alternative is to find a niche that is less competitive but still highly sought after, ideally it is a subject you know something about, and that either solves a problem, services a need or creates a new buzz in the blogging world, more about the latter at the end of this post.
Where do you start:
- The can I ask you a question scenario
- What you do for a living option
- What are your hobbies
- What experiences have you lived through
- What do you care about
- What would you like to change in the World
- Who would you like to help
The can I ask you a question scenario is simply when other people ask you how to do some task or function, what do you know how to do that other people don’t and is it a subject you would like to blog about. You could be a plumber, an electrician, an engineer or an expert in origami. Doesn’t matter if people are already seeing you as an expert in it then it is worth considering.
What you do for a living or as a hobby can be too easily taken for granted, you can become blasé about it and not even realise how valuable the information you carry around in your head is to other people. The same applies to life’s experiences, what have you lived through, learned how to handle or coped with and is that something you could blog about. All of these subjects give you the option of starting from a position of strength, of knowing your subject matter and giving you a basis from which to begin. Even if you subsequenty have to research for further information or go back to reference material, you will at least be able to understand what that information is telling you more easily and be able to add to it and represent it in your own style.
Then there are the passion categories, not that you aren’t passionate about the other topics just discussed, but these are the ones that can make you laugh, make you cry, lift your spirits or make your blood boil. Politics, sport, charities or music, it could be anything. But there is a good chance if it is important to you it will be important to a bunch of other people and a possible niche that you could fill with your blogging and create your own brand writing about it.
OK if you are still struggling for a topic, there is another way to get started, and that is to simply start listing topics to blog about, for example:
- blogging about blogging
- blogging about life
- blogging about products
- blogging about music
- blogging about food
- blogging about work
- blogging about books
- blogging about relationships
- blogging about weight loss
- blogging about yourself etc.etc.
This list could be absolutely endless but as you create your list you will get little sparks of inspiration, when you do, put a little star next to the subject and then keep writing until you just can’t come up with anymore topics. Once you are done you need a shortlist and those starred topics are going to be your short list for possible subjects.
Once you have your shortlist you need to find out if people are interested in those topics. The way to do this is to find out what gets entered into the search engines. You need to do some keyword analysis for each of your short listed topics and find out which ones are the hottest topics and which have a real demand.
So what happens if after all that effort you find that the topic you have chosen is not really in demand?
Do you meekly accept that it not worth pursuing and continue to look for whats called the market pull option, or do you decide to enter into a market push campaign and go for it anyway.
The reason I say that is because if you really believe you have a subject or topic worth pursuing, something you are really passionate about, then there may just be a chance that the people out there don’t actually know they want or need what you want to offer. These are the subjects that potentially can go exponential, a niche where not even the market knows they want it until you show it to them. If you can do that you will be creating that new buzz in the blogging world that was mentioned previously.
Some of the most successful people on the planet are the ones that entered this arena, either with products, services or information that people did not know they wanted. So think long and hard before discounting what could be a great idea.
Hopefully this dialogue will have got your creative juices flowing a bit and got you really thinking about what you would like to blog about.
I am pretty passionate about blogging about blogging, but if I am honest, the blog I am most passionate about is Music For Me. This is a subject I just love to blog about, love to research and love to share with others.
I actually don’t care if it makes money or whether I might be better putting certain genres of music on there that are more popular. I just put on the tracks I love and like to play and I just post to it when I want to and in my time.
Funny thing is that it is actually starting to get some support, so sometimes that just works as well. Albeit early days, so time will tell if passion alone is enough. I suspect not, but you never know.
They say that blogging is defined as expressing one’s self. However, there are so many people out there who abuse it or use it the wrong way because for them that is their way of expressing themselves. So, I guess blogging should instead be defined as expressing one’s self in a careful manner.
Not sure I agree with that entirely, some of the most successful bloggers are the most controversial. Doesn’t always work but it does sometimes and I guess at the end of the day it depends on what you are comfortable with.
