SEO Mentors – Are They Worth your Time

There are many people on the Internet who claim to have expertise in SEO Search engine optimization. They range from self-proclaimed gurus, some of which, to be fair, that have taken the time to learn their trade, to people who may have only just started publishing on the Internet and actually have very little experience in promoting websites or blogs.

Many of the SEO techniques that actually work are available on the Internet totally free. You do of course have to find them and somehow you have to be able to sort the wheat from the chaff, and to focus in on the techniques that work versus the ones that are absolutely wrong. This process can be extraordinarily time consuming and burn up hours of your precious time.

If you want to cut down on the amount of time that you spend finding the techniques that work, it basically means that you have to learn to trust someone, to read or listen to what they tell you and to have a little faith in that person. What you are effectively doing is accepting them as a mentor.

A good SEO mentor will guide you in the right direction they will be able to tell you what works versus what is a waste of time and effort and they will be providing this information from tried and tested experiences. In other words they will have tried some methods which have failed and have found some that have succeeded. They also need to be prepared to share this information with you honestly.

So how do you know if someone deserves your trust and indeed your time?

Instinct plays a big part in whether you accept someone as a mentor, do you like what they say, does it actually make sense, is it self contradicting, flawed, lacking in consistency or just plain boring.

You need to build up a level of confidence that you can trust what you are being told to a point where you no longer need to check every detail for yourself. In other words you will be able to go on faith that you have found someone who actually knows what they are talking about, in a way you can understand and emphasize with in an enjoyable way.

When you get to that point you will have found your SEO mentor and a route to achieving online success that is perhaps a little quicker than making all the mistakes by yourself. So in a nutshell if you can find the right SEO mentor it will definitely be worth investing some of your time seeing what they have to say.

Another good way to know whether someone is ok to listen to is by Googleing their name on the internet. Seeing who else is talking about them adds to their reputation.

When I was first starting out there was so much information to sort through, I didn’t know what to believe or what techniques to use.

What is hard to find is the step-by-step how-to’s on topics. Too often people say do x, y and z. Unfortunately it’s not clear enough for a beginner or they assume that you know how to actually do it.

Hi Dan, yes that is a good suggestion and I totally agree on the step by step approach to providing information. When you are just starting out you not only need to know what to do, you also need to know how to do it.
